NGA TAI O TE AWA is a Māori health and development organisation operating across Whanganui, Rangitikei, Waimarino and South Taranaki.

Our purpose is to empower Māori to thrive in life, health and wellbeing.

We help build the capacity of individuals, groups, and/or communities to take control of their circumstances, exercise power, and achieve their own goals.

Our work involves:

  • Building community resilience and raising awareness of mental health challenges and addictions, and providing relevant social services.
  • Supporting social enterprises to grow and increase their impact
  • Encouraging and mentoring youth to build resilience and good relationships.
  • Activating talent, raising awareness, and building capability amongst iwi, hapū, and whānau.

NGA TAI O TE AWA has 3 main areas of focus: Health, Youth, and Enterprise.

We run a range of health promotion activities to encourage healthy behaviours, create supportive environments, and influence healthy public policy.  This enables whanau to increase control over, and to improve, their health.

We provide a safe environment to promote innovation and creativity in young people.  Our mentors play a crucial ‘catalytic’ role, especially with those young people who are disadvantaged and hard to reach.

We help people start-up businesses, particulalry those with social enterprise models.  Social enterprises are purpose-driven organisations that trade to deliver social and environmental impact.  There is a strong alignment between the concepts of social enterprise and Maori economic development aspirations.
